SailVentures specializes in sailing expeditions and faith-oriented, intellectual development of high school and college students. Our mission is to inspire students’ senses of adventure and to build intellectual confidence in faith. All programs include a multi-day sailing journey and a curriculum which addresses the intellectual challenges of living out faith in an academic setting. Programs are designed to address a number of issues surrounding Christianity – ranging from historical, theological, and philosophical questions to questions concerning how to live out life the Christian life as a student. Through physical, mental, and spiritual challenges our hope is that students will become more confident in who they are as individuals and more knowledgeable about the Christian faith.
SailVentures Staff
Director: Edward Dixon is the Director of SailVentures. He started the company in 2008 in order to create a forum in which students can discuss the myriad intellectual challenges that arise in living out faith in American high schools and universities. Edward has dedicated the past nine years to the academic exploration of the historical aspects of Christianity. After graduating from Duke University in 2000 with a B.A. in Public Policy, Edward proceeded to complete a M.A. in Religion at Yale Divinity School and he is currently completing his Ph.D. in New Testament Studies at Emory University. Edward is an active member of an Anglican congregation in Atlanta where he serves as a volunteer high school youth group leader. He has sailed the waters of the Chesapeake Bay since 2000 and he captained a sailing vessel in the Caribbean during the summer of 2007. SailVentures combines Edward’s intellectual fervor for understanding the context of theology in today’s academic setting with his other passion — sailing.
Captains: Each boat will be captained by an experienced, safety-conscious captain. In the United States, all captains are US Coast Guard licensed.
Mates: All our mates are experienced youth counselors. Those who sign up as a group may even have their own youth leader as a mate!
