Day 1: Tortola to Norman Island (anchor)
Welcome to paradise. In the first hours of your journey, you’ll trade in those winter boots and sweaters for snorkel fins and bathing suits. Our first sail is across the Sir Frances Drake Channel to the caves at Norman Island – one of the most famous snorkeling spots in the Caribbean. Your exploration of sea-life and the cave’s interior will make an unforgettable introduction to your BVI experience. After the evening’s meal on-board the boat, we’ll settle in for the first night’s teaching.
Day 2: Norman Island to Cane Garden Bay (anchor)
The highlights keep on coming. Day two will take us to the North side of Tortola to the white sandy beaches of Cane Garden Bay. When you imagine the tropics, this is the picture in your mind. Blue water and a nice, gently curved beach lined with palm trees. We’ll relax on the beach, swim in the waters, and enjoy the scenery. We’ll have a time of teaching earlier in the evening so we don’t miss our first taste of Caribbean night life. Live music and good fare will cap the night off right.
Day 3: Cane Garden Bay to Spanish Town (dock)
Today we sail on around the North side of the island and head over to Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda. The Fat Lady will give us a chance to do some souvenir hunting and to discover a bit of Caribbean history. We will check out the ruins of a 19th century copper mine. At the ruins, we’ll go back even further in history to talk about the early days of Christianity. Spanish Town offers a vibrant night-life for those who didn’t get enough the night before!
Day 4: Spanish Town (and the Baths) to Bitter End (mooring)
The spectacular rock formations known as The Baths will reward this early morning wake-up. The Baths is the premier attraction of the BVI. These rocks are made for climbing, tunneling, snorkeling, and jumping. There is even time for a moment of awe at creation in the part known as the Cathedral. If the crowds permit, we’ll have a short time of teaching here. After The Baths, we will sail around into the North Sound and spend the day hanging out at the famous Bitter End Yacht Club. The night will provide a breather and be a nice, cozy night aboard.
Day 5: Bitter End to Marina Cay (anchor)
Don’t let this tiny eight-acre island fool you. It’s a great spot for snorkeling and the view of the top of the island is spectacular. We’ll spend our afternoon exploring the island and its beaches before our last night of teaching overlooking the waters we’ve called our home for the past five days.
Day 6: Marina Cay to Tortola
The last day provides the chance for one last sail. We’ll rise early to make our final voyage over to our home port on Tortola. We’ll say our good-byes and well-wishes and head back to our respective colleges and universities – both you and me!
